Feasibility Studies

We develop energy projects for commercial and industrial clients. We use our engineering background to identify potential retrofits; our energy simulation skills to quantify retrofit impacts; and our monitoring skills to determine key operating parameters used in developing loads and equipment performance.

Selected Projects

Geothermal Technical Support
Focus on Energy
Provided technical support to the Focus on Energy program throughout Wisconsin. Met with building owners and design teams to introduce geothermal technology and guide initial feasibility analysis. Support included review of preliminary designs, cost estimating, locating contractors for testing, design and installation.

Evaluating the Potential of Building CHP at a Large Resort
NYSERDA and The DOE CHP Assessment Center
Evaluated the technical and economic potential of a large CHP system in a large resort complex in Madison County, NY. Developed detailed hourly models to predict thermal and electric loads and simulate performance of various CHP options. Evaluated and compared the impact of grid parallel and standalone CHP system operation.

Novation Center Central Plant Analysis
MidTowne Center LLC.
This study examined the impacts of applying a central plant to a building campus in Madison, Wisconsin. It considered the opportunity to size equipment based on campus-wide diversity, reducing overall capacity; the opportunity for improved equipment efficiency; on-site electricity generation with heat recovery; and load control such as thermal storage. The study evaluated electric service options including aggregation of the campus to a single electric service as well as the option of a lower priced interruptible electric rate with on-site electricity generation. Building thermal and electric loads were developed from hourly energy simulations of typical building types.

Geothermal Feasibility Studies for Schools
Various Wisconsin School Districts and Design/Build Firms
Developed engineering feasibility studies to assess the application of geothermal heat pumps. Analysis featured complete building energy simulation model including interactions of lighting, equipment, occupancy, ventilation, heating and cooling. Analysis quantified the impact of lighting efficiency improvements, ventilation rate control, occupancy changes, and variable-air-volume system control on operating costs and geothermal system assessment. Study investigated capital costs as well as maintenance cost differences with the geothermal heat pumps.

Wastewater Treatment Facility Waste Heat Recovery Options Analysis
Focus on Energy
This study looked at options for maximizing heat recovery, onsite power generation and using heat pumps at the Sheboygan WWTF. Biogas from sludge disgestion, waste heat from the neighboring power plant, and gas engine driven pumps provided several configuration options. We created a model using plant load data along with digester performance and weather data to determine energy and economic impacts of heat recovery and power genration options.
