Market Assessments

Technical market assessments look at the energy and economic advantages of alternative options on a market-wide basis. We develop simulations to represent the energy technology as well as segmentation of the market to capture variations in characteristcs impacting acceptance.

Selected Projects

Geoexchange Market Support
Geothermal Heat Pump Consortium for NYSERDA
Developed a document reviewing the commercial geoexchange market in New York State and developed a document to assist owners and design team in understanding and assessing geoexchange for their projects.

Assessment of the Market Potential for the GAX Commercial Rooftop in Canada
Carrier Corporation
Used analytical market assessment techniques to predict the potential of a Commercial rooftop version of the GAX (generator-absorber-heat-exchange) absorption heat pump in the US and Canada. The evaluation focused on the market for light commercial rooftop systems up to 15 tons. The analysis divided the market into segments based on thermal loads, efficiency levels, utility rate structures and regional construction practices. The approach predicted total shipments based on selling price as well as the resulting impacts on the customer, gas and electric utilities and society in general.

GAX Heat Pump Market Assessment
Oak Ridge National Laboratory
Developed assessment techniques and software to predict the market potential of a GAX (generator-absorber-heat-exchange) absorption heat pump in the US residential and light commercial heating and cooling applications. The evaluation divided the market of competing technologies into segments based on thermal loads, efficiency levels, utility rate structures and regional construction practices. The GAX competed against each segment based on payback and incremental capital cost criteria. The analysis predicted total US shipments based on selling price as well as the resulting impacts on the customer, gas and electric utilities and society in general. The importance of analysis assumptions was also parametrically analyzed with model.

Evaluation of Gas-Fired Desiccant Technologies
Brooklyn Union
Assessed the potential for gas-fired desiccant equipment in various building applications to determine where the technology has the most potential. Commercially-available desiccant equipment were evaluated in several generic building applications with building simulation models to identify the conditions where these systems have the most potential. Used TRNSYS, DOE-2 and custom models to simulate supermarkets, commercial buildings and residences with eight buildings types, eight technologies, and more than a dozen system configurations in four climates, resulting in over 1,000 simulation runs.
